Executive Summary

We believe global helium markets will remain in a deficit, which in our opinion provides opportunity for producers who have access to proven, secure and reliable helium reserves. Our forecast calls for a return to balance toward the middle of the decade as Russia plans to commission its Amur mega project. Two main drivers are ending the United States’ role as swing capacity provider and global helium stockpile—ongoing rapid depletion of the Hugoton natural gas field, the main source of helium for the U.S. Federal system, and the closing of public auctions from the federal helium reserve stockpile, as the reservoir has breached its minimum strategic reserve level.

With the decline of the U.S. as the global primary helium source, we believe the North American market is exceptionally ripe for new production. The U.S. helium industry continues to exploit decades-old helium discoveries from the 1960s, and the shift to unconventional natural gas production has focused development in non-helium bearing basins.

Well-capitalized helium producers with large, prospective land bases backed by proven reserves and seasoned management should be in a strong position to capitalize on the current pricing dynamics for helium in North America. Our industry research within the United States and Canada evaluated several emerging helium exploration and development companies, at varying stages of development. Although comparable data was not readily available for many entities, in our opinion one firm emerged as a clear leader.

Based on our analysis, we believe the company best positioned to commercialize sustainable, proven helium reserves into revenue-generating production is North American Helium.

North American Helium (“NAH”) is a private company with notable success exploring for new helium fields in Saskatchewan—a province with the highest-grade uranium deposits in the world. We believe that NAH is unique in its focus on large-scale exploration for non-hydrocarbon helium deposits within North America.

NAH Highlights

  • Discovered four helium-rich nitrogen fields in Saskatchewan, marking the first successful North American exploration discovery of new economic fields of gas containing high helium concentrations in the past 40 years.

  • Dominant land position of over 3.7 million acres in North America of conventional nitrogen gas deposits with a high helium content, near infrastructure, in geographical regions without significant political or environmental hurdles to development.

  • Led by a professional and collaborative management team which combines strong scientific, engineering, geologic and business capabilities. As the Company continues to advance its strategy toward building a leading helium exploration and production company, it has been actively growing its technical and organizational capabilities.

  • Established a strong track record of value creation and garnered solid institutional support through a series of private financings since 2013. The company has raised $120 million including the recent financing of $39 million announced on May 28, 2020, with over 75% ownership by insiders.
